Nearly half of drivers dislike dealing with garages and workshops, research reveals

NEW research has revealed that almost half of motorists dislike dealing with garages and workshops to organise their vehicle’s MOT, servicing and repairs.

The study, commissioned by quote-finding website MyCarNeedsA.com, discovered that 45 per cent of of 1,000 drivers who were quizzed felt that way, while 33 per cent found it more stressful than renewing their car insurance.

It also showed that the majority of motorists were loyal to their local independent garage workshop, with 74 per cent of respondents saying they relied on them for all their servicing, MOT and repairs.

However, of those needing recommendations, 11 per cent of motorists will ring round to get the best deal and seven per cent will ask a friend for recommendations, while four per cent will look up businesses online and another four per cent will use an online comparison site to check prices, reviews and services in their local area, according to the poll.

The research also showed that just 26  per cent of motorists will book a service when they receive a dashboard message prompt, while a third always have their car serviced after a certain amount of time, for example, 12 months. Just 19 per cent of motorists will book a service after their car has reached a certain mileage. Once their car is over three years old, the majority of motorists (82 per cent) forget the service dates.

Scott Hamilton, pictured, managing director of MyCarNeedsA.com, said: ‘It’s no surprise that motorists dislike dealing with garages for servicing, MOT and repairs. Often they are worried about the cost of servicing or getting their car fixed, especially at a time when they face above-inflation price hikes for insurance, fuel, parking and speeding fines.

‘Motorists are having to dig deeper into their pockets to run and maintain their vehicles.  It certainly pays for motorists to carry out some research and shop around when they need to book an MOT, servicing or repairs. We created MyCarNeedsA.com to provide motorists with good-quality work on their vehicles at the right price. We are not about giving motorists the cheapest price irrespective of quality, but about fair and transparent pricing.

‘We get quotes from trusted service providers and only allow authorised repairers to quote for work, backed by a guarantee that only genuine parts are used on vehicles and all parts and labour come with a 12-month guarantee.

‘Motorists across the UK have been able to save time, money and hassle on more than 200,000 service, maintenance and repair jobs through MyCarNeedsA.com. With most customers requiring an average of three jobs per annum on their vehicle, each job placed on the site is an opportunity to save a little extra towards those unplanned costs.’

MyCarNeedsA.com now works with 4,000 dealers, garage and workshop partners nationwide.
