VOLKSWAGEN retailers are offering customers a free tyre safety check throughout the month of February.
Motorists who take their VW to a participating retailer before the end of the month will receive the tyre safety check, along with an express visual check, before the car is washed, vacuumed and given back to them.
The tyre safety check consists of three steps. First, each tyre will be checked overall to make sure there are no cuts or bulges. A close inspection can often reveal objects embedded in the tread.
Secondly, the tread will be checked to make sure it can cope with standing water on the road. Although the legal minimum is 1.6mm, performance is affected once the tread is less then 3mm, which can have an impact on factors such as braking distance.
Finally, the tyre pressure will be measured and adjusted if necessary, in order to prevent increased or uneven wear across the tyre. If the pressure is not maintained correctly, handling and grip can be adversely impacted. Under-inflated tyres can also lead to increased fuel consumption.
The VW retailer carrying out the check will also ensure that a spare wheel or tyre repair kit is ready in case of an emergency. The express visual check will then be carried out, where a technician examines 34 areas of the customer’s car.
All this is free of charge until February 28 for VW models between 18 months and 10-years-old.
